The Importance of Effective Lesson Delivery

Effective lesson delivery is as important as planning the lesson. In this section, I will be reflecting on these importances. Planning a lesson takes time and can be theoretical but when it is implemented many challenges can be faced by the teacher. We are to learn to overcome these challenges over time with experience.

One of the importance of having effective lesson plan is to ensure that the learning objectives are conveyed clearly by the end of the lesson. When a lesson is effectively delivered this shows that the students understood the lesson objectives that have been set by their teacher. This is what I had observed during my placement. My mentor emphasized that what is given in the scheme of work does not work quite well with the class she teaches. She said that the proficiency level of her students are lower than what they should be, hence, the planned topics for the students are too difficult which she personally modifies to fit her students. My mentor always showed her lesson plan beforehand and with all her clear instructions and good class management she manages to deliver the lesson well and achieve her lesson objectives. There were two days where she did not manage to finish what had been planned, so she brought forward the lesson to the next day. This shows that even with effective lesson planning and lesson delivery, we can still end a lesson without being able to complete what has been planned. In conjunction with my observation, this occurs because students are disruptive during class and some among of attention were given to them making the lesson move a little slow.

Throughout my teaching practicum at SK Seafield 3, I was really grateful to have the opportunity given by mentor to help assist with the weaker students in her English lessons. Some considerations I made before planning for teaching aids were the students’ age, proficiency level, and their prior knowledge (although they were in Year 4, their English proficiency level is rather low), the availability of resources and the instruction given by my mentor (to focus on reading and writing using any material). From this, I obtained another importance of having effective lesson delivery. Only by having effective lesson delivery, we will be able to know the proficiency and prior knowledge of our students. An effective lesson delivery comes hand in hand with the assessment. A well-prepared lesson should have a short assessment after every lesson; it can be as simple as verbal questioning pertaining the topic they learned or a short multiple choice question. With this, we as teachers will be able to know if the students have grasped the lesson and the level they are at. Not only that, with effective lesson delivery, teachers will be able to observe students’ behavior and he or she will be able to notice the learning style of the students.

Planning ahead to identify a course of action that can effectively reach goals and objectives is an important first step in any process, and education is no exception. In order to have effective lesson delivery, we first have to think about effective lesson planning. In education, the planning tool is the lesson plan, which is a detailed description of a teacher’s course of instruction for an individual lesson intended to help students achieve a particular learning objective. Lesson plans communicate to students what they will learn and how they will be assessed, and they help instructors organize content, materials, time, instructional strategies, and assistance in the classroom.

I also realized that effective lesson delivery is important when I had my first lesson with the students of 4T. In all honesty, my first lesson with them did not go all well because there were flaws in my delivery of the lesson. First was because the students needed a constant translation of English to Bahasa Malaysia, being away from speaking Bahasa Malaysia for about four years, my national language was a little rusty that I stuttered and had to take the time to think about the right word when I helped the students translate words. Besides that, I also showed some form of nervousness when I was teaching, this is a ‘big no’ when it comes to teaching especially to small students. When students sense that the teacher is scared and so on, they tend to misbehave and step over the teacher making it even harder to deliver the planned lesson. Hence, from this experience, another importance of effective lesson delivery is to avoid misbehaviors.
